RED CUBE

The Cube is an exciting retail unit located out-with the University of Dundee campus. A non-institutional space where potential applicants can gain more knowledge and understanding of the art school experience while also being a potential hub for more collaborative opportunities between students and local businesses. The Cube will be used not only as an information facility but also to celebrate the school’s achievements by showcasing the exciting work of DJCAD students.  It was mainly influenced by the façade of the Matthew building which brings together three visual elements: red, glass and concrete. The contrast of heavy materials and delicate forms influenced the material choices including a combination of industrial gridded flooring, red glass and concrete. Geometric shapes taken from the architecture of the building were the main influences of the translucent red cube, an experience within the interior yet also a more private space to be used in many ways. With brand-scaping in mind, the interior has been designed to visualise the vivid identity of the art school that the students recognise and the public are intrigued by. The Cube is a skeletal interior for the occupiers to exhibit, to hold events and experience, a space that lets the artwork do all the talking while enhancing the experience of those moving through the space.  The works of Piet Mondrian and Fuse Atelier were major influences in the development of this interior, bringing to light the interesting relationship between shape and the rationality of the structure.
