The Cloud is a sculptural journey which begins at the glass door leading into the church, making the entrance feel more welcoming by encouraging visitors and the existing church community to come in. The visitor must enter the church itself in order to experience the new sculptural environment. Starting below and ascending to above the cloud, it is an experience where the physical form meets the body in a harmonic relationship between the mind and space, where the inhabitant can feel at peace in contemplation. The central experience of The Cloud is the journey to the top, giving those journeying a sense of accomplishment when they reach it. The movement of the material on the lower section suggests a shift, a passing of time between the inhabitant and space. The lighting creates a soothing ambience, where the explorer can observe sudden shifts of the cloud, and shadows created by others interacting with it. The use of reflective material for the ceiling makes space appear taller than it really is while also reflecting the movement of the inhabitants within the space below. The linear language of the cloud is inspired by Kengo Kuma’s Shizuoka International Garden pavilion, while the relationship between mind and space within the design was influenced by Olafur Eliasson. Above the cloud, there is a viewing platform with seating which mimics the linear language from The Cloud below, where visitors and members of the congregation can reflect on their lives, the ever-shifting and changing nature of time passing, a place where everyone can feel at peace within themselves.
