OOPS..

A kitchen which embraces mishaps.

Frustration at small mishaps is often seen in patients recovering from a stroke. But the likes of spilling, falling making a mess affects us all in our daily routine. Re-learning how to use your body again can be difficult and people recovering may find themselves feeling excluded, while families remain concerned over safety while in the kitchen.

The key was to observe how people who suffered from a stroke move around the kitchen, by interviewing families who care for their loved ones. The focus was frustration and feelings of exclusion within the space. Body storming was also used to gain a better understanding of how difficult it is to cook, open and twist with one hand, while the act of spilling caused a lot of embarrassment.

The ‘Oops’ kitchen concept design embraces mishaps and aims to change the users’ perspective on how we view these awkward accidents. The island’s tables are embedded with sensors which digitally map out the spill, creating a timeline of mishaps.
